I like the gloves… It’s wonder how they can find the accessories they need (and a lot they don’t need) on this desert island. BJ seems to be roaming like a genie, a sadist one maybe, for our great delight…

I re-read the entire strip lately, and formed the opinion that they are, in fact, in Hell. Since it’s a spiritual state, physical objects can pop in and out of existence as required to satisfy dramatic exigencies and keep the tortures fresh.

Oh yay! A philosophical discussion of BT! (And maybe the elusive BJ?)

Michael, I don’t think they’d miss it if they were in hell. It seems more like some kind of bizarro tribulation. (Not to be confused with The Wrath; the word tribulation in the bible defines as pressure. It’s the same Greek word translated as narrow – “the narrow gate.”)

Scottie accepts God’s love, but not reality. He can’t accept that his mom didn’t love him. God is probably the only one who’s ever loved him. So when he “hurts” the little doll, he takes the role of a “good” mom, puts on a dress and cares for it.

Rosemary also rejects reality. She is her own god. She ties two one-armed men together to make them “whole.” She refuses to see her own character flaws and so would rather starve and dream of eating her companions than get off her behind and get some food. (And of course, Scottie as well.)

Tom runs (literally) from the baggage of his life – I think he’s secretly gay. While he deals with all the hardships of the island, there’s something in his past he wants to bury.

So, since none of them face reality, I think they were put in a controlled unreality. A place where their foibles won’t kill them while they work it out.

They are all of us. Except we can definitely get hit by a truck and not shake it off two panels later.

Or I’m totally wrong and BJ is just messin’ with us.

Now I’m going to be brave and not have this go on the ash heap of un-posted comments.

Well, I for one think you made a number of cogent and compelling points! I’ll bet the crickets do too!

The bugs and I make quite a team. 🙂
